Every week, dogs in Taos County are left behind, born outdoors, or struggling without the basics: food, safety, medical care, and a place to rest and heal. Some have been on their own for months or even years before anyone reaches them.
At Taos Hound Underground, we meet them where they are. We offer calm hands, clean water, real food, vet care, and a safe rest stop for recovery after spay or neuter surgery. But we cannot do it alone.

Volunteer with Taos Hound Underground
At Taos Hound Underground, we understand that many of our dogs have faced hardships that make them cautious and in need of gentle care. They are often recovering from health issues and the pain of abandonment. Because of this, our volunteers play a vital role not just in providing physical care but also in offering patience, compassion, and understanding.
Every volunteer receives personalized on-site training from our Founder and Professional Dog Trainer, Jen Havens. This training teaches you how to read each dog’s unique body language and behavior so you can meet their needs safely and effectively. Volunteering here is a rewarding experience that combines active work with quiet moments of connection. Between cleaning and maintaining our facilities, there’s time to simply be with the dogs, offering them comfort and companionship as they heal.
Our volunteers are truly top-notch, and we welcome anyone ready to commit their time and heart to this important mission. Here are some of the ways you can contribute:
